Driver CPC
Our Driver CPC Course
CPC Driver Certificate of Professional Competence
A new qualification for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers - the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) - has been given the Government go-ahead. In future, just holding a vocational driving licence will not be sufficient for someone who wishes to drive such vehicles for a living. Services to Business can offer Driver CPC to companies in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and beyond.
What is Driver CPC?
A qualification for new and existing LGV and PCV drivers which increases the amount of knowledge and skills required to drive professionally.
Why choose us?
As an approved training provider, Wakefield College can now offer partial funding towards Periodic Training for drivers enrolling on a NVQ award in Carry & Deliver Goods or Driving Goods Vehicles. Funding for 7 hours of the required 35 hours is covered under Government funding, with the remainder being met by either the driver or the employer.
What is Periodic Training?
EU Directive 2003/59 requires all professional LGV and PCV drivers to undertake 35 hours of training every five years to ensure that their Driver CPC is current.

There are no pass or fail elements but evaluation of training will be undertaken to ensure candidates have benefited from training.

What is the purpose of Periodic Training?
Periodic Training is designed to confirm and expand on the existing skills and knowledge of each driver to ensure that they continue to be confident, safe and fuel efficient drivers.
What does Periodic Training cover?
The Directive lays out the syllabus which covers three main groups of subjects:
• Advanced training in rational driving based on safety regulations
• Application of regulations
• Health, roads and environmental safety, service, logistics

When does the Driver CPC start?
The Directive became effective from 10 September 2008 for the PCV sector and will be in force from 10 September 2009 for the LGV sector.
Is public funding available?
The agency that funds training in England is the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). The LSC rulings specifically exclude funding for mandatory industry training. This means that Periodic Training does not qualify for any public funding.

The funding position in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is different to England because the agencies who fund training are different due to the devolved administrations.
